Teddy and Katie's Wedding

Last weekend everyone traveled to Des Moines to help Teddy and Katie celebrate their wedding. The wedding was absolutely beautiful and it was tons of fun. Both Teddy and Katie looked so great and happy all day. I'm so happy for them!!

It was great to get to see everyone and hang out, but the reception was a loud party so we didn't get to have real great conversations. Luckily for all of us, we get to all get together again this coming weekend for the Bell Reunion - only, like, the best weekend of the summer!

I didn't do a good job at taking great pictures of the actual wedding because I figured I'd leave that up to the photographers :) But I did catch a few other random pictures and some good video of Teddy performing for everyone! Enjoy!
My one picture from the ceremony

Katie was absolutely gorgeous!

Below is just my little thing I put together of Teddy and Emi singing Picture by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. They sang it at the very beginning of the reception and then again at the end. This video shows all of the first performance and about half of the second. Sorry it's not great quality, but you get the point :)

And just for fun: Uncle Dan unknowingly performing the next day in our hotel room, attempting to get all the words to Enya's "Only Time" correct... I missed the best part where he really was singing, but you still can enjoy this! It makes me smile because that's exactly what my dad used to sing like. They must be related!

CJD Family Conference in Washington D.C.

A few weeks back, my mom and I took a trip to Washington D.C. to attend the CJD Foundation Family Conference that has been an annual event for the past 11 years.

We boarded our plane in Omaha around 5:30 on Friday morning and we were on our way. We got to D.C. around 11:30, ate some lunch at the airport, and then made our to our hotel. The conference was taking place at the hotel where we were staying, The Washington Court Hotel.

When we made it to the hotel, we dropped our bags off at the front door and headed right to our first session. The first two sessions we went to were some of my favorites because they were the most interactive. There were some short presentations by some "experts" at the beginning of the sessions and then there were some question and answer sessions. We had the opportunity to ask questions to some of the doctors and other professionals who were there and also ask questions to other family members who have been dealing with the affects of CJD for longer than the short nine months since we first heard about and were affected by the disease. And as sad as it was at times, I loved the openness of all the attendees there who were willing to share their stories and how CJD had affected their families. What stuck out to me was all the positive people there who weren't going to let CJD overtake their lives and were there to share what they have learned through their grief and how they have continued to honor their loved ones through their own lives. Everyone there was truly there to support each other, as no one else can really understand what this disease does to a family until you've been through it. And all of us have been through it!

After the first sessions, there was a short break where we were able to check into our room and then headed back downstairs to a Welcome Reception. We were able to mingle and talk with others one-on-one at this point. We met some people who's names we recognized through the CJD Family Facebook and met a handful of ladies who turned out to be our "tablemates" for the rest of the weekend.

At the end of the welcome reception, we took the few hours we had before dark to go do some sight seeing. This was my first time in D.C., so I was anxious to be able to see all that we could. We took a taxi to the Lincoln Memorial and then began walking our way back towards our hotel (towards the Capitol), past the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial and the WWII Memorial and then up by the White House.

And of course, we were Reading it Everywhere while we were sightseeing!
After walking down to the Washington Monument, we turned to head up towards the White House.

Right after taking that picture, my phone died, so we didn't get to "Read It" in front of the White house or get our picture taken together in front of it or anything, but I guess we'll have to do that next time! It didn't take us long after walking around a bit to decide that we had to come back again to really take in the sights and explore some more. We just didn't have enough time do everything we should!

After we left the White House, we walked the three blocks to the Union Pacific D.C. office just to see what it looked like. My co-worker called me a nerd when I told her that I was going to go past there, but it just seemed like the perfect thing to do since I was right there anyway!

We then made our way to the nearest Metro station and went back to the hotel to call it a night. Neither one of us brought proper walking shoes since we didn't have a ton of room in our carry-on luggage, so our feet were pretty sore by the time we were done for the night! We'll bring better walking shoes next time we go, too!

On the Metro
Bright and early on Saturday morning, it was time for the conference to start up again. To start off the day, there was a memorial service in honor of all the family members of the conference attendees who had passed away from CJD. There were a few readings and then they read the names of each loved one and put a purple iris in a vase for each one. It was a very nice symbol to have at the front of the conference room through the weekend.

Each person attending the conference could also bring a picture of their loved one to have placed on the Memory Wall at the front of the conference room. We brought our family picture that was taken in November of 2010 and the picture of my dad when he was smiling big while walking out of the tunnel at the Girls Basketball State Tournament in 2011 to put up on the wall.

The rest of the day on Saturday was filled with presentations by a lot of doctors giving updates on their progress in studying to find new ways to track, cure and figure out CJD. A lot of the information was very complex and I'm not sure I understood all of what they were saying, but it was comforting to know that there are some very smart people out there who are working hard to find out all they can about this disease. The last presentation of the day was done by Dr. Gambetti from the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center. He gave an update on statistics of the disease that were gathered from questionnaires the families fill out after a loved one passes away from CJD. It was quite interesting to see the numbers and the trends they are trying to track. The report also made it evident that there is a great need for awareness about the disease so families who are affected by CJD know the importance of having an autopsy done on their loved one and filling out that questionnaire. They are both small steps that can be taken to help those who are working hard to research and determine if there are any trends that go along with the disease so they can make strides to figure out all the complexities of CJD.

On Saturday night, we all gathered again for a nice banquet meal. We had some good conversation and a presentation by the CJD Foundation President Florence Kranitz.

More purple irises for centerpieces.
New friends
We sat at a table for the weekend with two other women who, like my mom, had lost their husbands to CJD. The most bizarre thing about the whole situation was that all three of their husbands had passed away last September within six days of each other. That just accentuated the fact that, at this conference, there are so many people who know what you have gone through more than anyone else out there and, in this case, there are others who were going through the same thing at the same exact time.

On Sunday, there were some more presentations, including some by people who were given research grants by the CJD Foundation to do their work.

After the presentations, those that were staying until Monday and going to Capitol Hill to advocate to their respective representatives to not reduce greatly the amount of funding that goes toward prion disease research stayed to do some advocacy training. I then went up to our hotel room to pack to head home because I had to get home so I could go to work the next day.

When the training was over, my mom along with some of her new friends were going to go to Arlington Cemetery to see the Changing of the Guard, so I rode the Metro with them until my stop that I needed to go to the airport. I was glad I was able to leave her in good hands so she wasn't all alone in the big city! :)

All those that were going to Arlington Cemetery waiting for the train.
All in all, it was a whirlwind of a trip: we met a lot of people, were introduced to a lot of new things, learned new things, cried, saw some cool historical things, ate some good food and got to hear a lot about what people are doing to find a cure for CJD.

During the the conference, the quote below was shown and it instantly became a new favorite of mine.

I love it because it is so true. Everyone has their own talents and passions, but everyone has the ability to make a positive impact on the world. I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason. God doesn't make mistakes. We don't have to understand why things happen, we just have to trust that He is in control and do the best we can.
Think about it this way: sometimes the best people (my dad and my family) are affected by the worst things (CJD) so those people and those surrounding them (our family, friends, and community) can be the people who use the situation for good, shining their light in the world. Whether it's using our resources to raise money for the CJD Foundation and help to find a cure so other families can be spared the pain that is caused by it; using our experience with grief to help others who are going through the same thing, showing them that it is possible to get through it; using our voices to spread awareness of CJD, so other families know that they are facing a CJD diagnosis as early as possible and can cherish the times they have with their loved ones; or just by continuing to be positive people, trusting God and praising Him through this all!
I think that sometimes I'm the candle and sometimes I'm the mirror, but I know that this little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine!!

4th of July

This year for the 4th of July, we spent the holiday at home. With it being on a Thursday and knowing that I had some very long work days ahead of me, we decided that was the best decision. It wasn't so bad either because there we found plenty to do around our neighborhood and there was definitely no shortage of fireworks!

Trent and I on the 4th
On Wednesday night after work, we went across the street to the neighbors to eat and hang out. As soon as it got dark, they put on a fireworks show for us all. They had a lot to shoot off and it was great. Our entire neighborhood is pretty crazy with fireworks, so when there was a break in ours, you could just turn your head in another direction and see fireworks somewhere else! This is one of the reasons why I love living in our neighborhood. All of our neighbors are very nice and friendly and always willing to help each other out. It's also nice to have events like this where everyone can get together and hang out for the night. I love how busy our street is with kids and families always outside. We are the only couple within the 8 or so houses surrounding us (it might be more, but we really don't know the neighbors that far away) that don't have kids, and most of them have between 2 and 4 kids per house, so that's A LOT of kids! It makes it a really fun place to live.

All the neighbors and friends across the street.
On the 4th, we slept in and and then got ready to have a few people over at our house. Two of Trent's co-workers, Ben and Joey, and Joey's husband came over in the afternoon to hang out and have supper before people got crazy with the fireworks again and it was time to watch them.

We hung out in the back of the house most of the afternoon and early evening. We all sat around and chatted and ate some good stuff Trent grilled up and played a few games of bags.
Mattie DOES.NOT like the sound of fireworks (or thunder or the vacuum or anything like that) so she stayed close to Trent on the deck for a while. Now, seriously, in our neighborhood for the whole week or so leading up to the 4th, there are people almost constantly setting some sort of explosive off, whether it be an actual firework or just something that makes noise or whatever else people blow up these days for fun... And when it gets dark, it's like constant gunfire outside. It's a miracle that Mattie didn't have some sort of physical symptom like a seizure or a stroke or something because she was under a large amount of stress for about a week straight. Poor dog! I'm glad to say we made it through seizure-free though!

When it started to get dark, we all went out the front of the house to watch all the fireworks that people were starting to set off. One good thing with the battle-like atmosphere that's going on in our neighborhood around the 4th is that we get to watch a lot of fireworks and not spend any money! There's no doubt that there's A LOT of money going to those fireworks stands from our neighborhood alone!

Trent, Ben, Kyle and Joey
We stayed out until things kind of started to die down. Our guests headed home and I headed to bed because I knew I had a few long days of work ahead of me and I was already up later than I should have been. (I ended up working about 30 hours from Friday-Sunday that weekend...)

This year, the 4th was great because we were able to relax a bit and be at home but still have fun with some friends and neighbors. I'm looking forward to next year when the 4th falls on a Friday again and creates a long weekend again for those of us who work in Finance and have to work a lot at the beginning of July because of quarter close. ;)

As I was getting ready for bed I saw flashes of light outside the window by my bed. I looked through the blinds and saw what I think was probably some of the best fireworks in our area that day. It may have been since they were so close to us, but, nevertheless, they were good!
I hope you all had a good 4th of July holiday and enjoy this video taken from my bedroom window! :)

June Birthday Party! Fredericksen Edition

The last weekend in June was another big birthday celebration! This time was with the Fredericksen's! Trent's birthday is on the 22nd of June, Jan's is the 24th, mine is the 29th and Melodie's is the 1st of July. And you know what that means... FOUR cakes! :)

The festivities started on Friday when I got home from work and everyone was already there and ready to get going! Trent's cousins Denise and Staci were in town for Jadyn's basketball tournament, so after a little supper from the Hy-Vee Deli, we went to watch her play. The whole thing reminded of me of my younger days playing basketball in the summers and reminded me of my dad, who was always there with me through it all. I would definitely go back and do that all over again! I hope that she truly enjoys this opportunity she has! I'm so glad we got to see her play!

She's the #9 on the right
On Saturday (my birthday!) I started off with one of the hardest and suckiest classes I've been to yet at Kosama. Let's just say there were A LOT of burpees. *bleh!* But I guess that just made all the cake I ate later that night a little more acceptable!

Then, mid morning, we all headed to the zoo. It was perfect weather for the zoo and evidently everyone else thought that too. Interstate 80 was backed up because of all the people headed to the zoo!

We leisurely made our way around the zoo, checking out all the animals on the way to the opposite side to check out the new exhibit with life-size, dinosaurs that both moved and made noises.

For the most part, I think the girls liked it, but I don't think they liked it very much when they made noises. It was better to just look at them and not see them acting "real" I think!

Right when we got out of the Dinosaur exhibit, there was a big grassy area that seemed to have been taken over by prairie dogs. Evidently they dug out of their confined area that is actually way across on the other side of the zoo. They were cute and not really afraid of anything... One of them even crawled into the basket underneath the stroller to check out what we were toting around.

One of them really seemed to like Jenna, too... I'm guessing she smelled like the PB&J sandwich she had for lunch! :)

Check out this video of the prairie dog shenanigans!

Next, we were off to take a ride around the zoo on the train. It was good to get to ride past all the animals we knew we weren't going to have time to go see close up. It was also nice to be able to sit and relax for a while, too!

After the train, the girls went on a ride on the carousel...

Then we made a stop up to see the otter and some birds and some more prairie dogs who were still in their little area where they were supposed to be.

The girls waiting for the otter to swim by the window again
Mel and Russ and the girls went through the Desert Dome and the Kingdom of the Knight exhibits and we waited by the exit for them to get out and then Trent and I and his parents took off for home to start getting everything ready for supper (mainly to make the ice cream we were having for dessert) while the other four went through the Aquarium and things before they left for home too. The zoo is such a fun place to visit but it sure does wear me out!

After everyone made it back to the house, Trent got to work grilling up supper for everyone. We had brats and burgers and chicken along with lettuce salad, strawberry cheesecake salad, and some fruit.

While Trent was grilling and we were getting supper ready, the girls played on the deck with all their snakes (they had two and then bought two more at the zoo) and the Beanie Babies I had at the house for them to play with. The Beanie Babies were me and my siblings' from when we were younger and I just rediscovered them when we were selling everything from our yesteryears at a garage sale. My aunt reminded me that we had gotten a lot of those Beanie Babies from her because she would let us play with them at her house and then we could take one home with us when we left. That sounded like a wonderful tradition for me to carry on! So I let the girls play with them all weekend and then they each got to take one home before they left. Taylor picked one of the rats (they were the most played with animal all weekend) so she could feed it to her snakes and Jenna picked a bird). I know now that these beanie babies will get A LOT more play time over many years! (That makes standing in line for them when the new ones went on sale a little more worth it, right, Doreen?!)

After supper it was time to open presents. The girls helped everyone open their gifts!

Trent got a Spork from Mel and Russ and the girls. It is actually a Titanium Spork that is VERY light weight. (It was crazy how light weight it really was!) Trent had asked for it so he could bring it along on their backpacking trip they went on last week. Melodie said she wouldn't ever pass up the opportunity to buy someone a spork when they ask for one since that doesn't happen all too often!

Casey liked to lay right in the middle of all the action!
Finally, it was time for cake and ice cream!! All of the birthday people got to say what kind of cake they wanted to have, so we had lots of choices! I chose the chocolate cake that Melodie always makes, Jan chose carrot cake, Trent chose lemon cake, and Melodie asked for ice cream, so we made some homemade ice cream! They were all awesome!

Even candles in the ice cream!
Jenna is really eying that cake!!
Saturday wrapped up with everyone watching Wreck it Ralph together and Sunday everyone went to church and then ate at our usual brunch spot, Le Peep, before they all had to head back home.

It was another great birthday celebration and I love that we get to celebrate all together each year!
